While brushing and flossing daily will generally provide your teeth and gums the protection they need from harmful bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease, practicing poor oral hygiene can lead your teeth to become badly infected or decayed. In instances where the health of a tooth has degraded substantially, you need a root canal to repair and save the tooth.

A root canal procedure becomes necessary when a tooth’s nerve becomes infected or the pulp becomes damaged. During the procedure, the nerve and pulp of a tooth are removed, and the interior tooth cleaned and sealed. Common perception of root canals has the procedure as being incredibly painful. However, most people who undergo a root canal find the procedure no more painful than having a tooth filled. The most painful period experienced is actually the time leading up to the root canal when the tooth is still infected, not the procedure itself.

Why You Need a Root Canal

Underneath the hard outer shell of enamel that covers your teeth lies a soft center area known as the pulp. The pulp contains root canals, which house the nerve of a tooth and travel from the top of a tooth to its base. The pulp also contains a variety of connective tissue and blood vessels that help to nourish the tooth.

When the nerve tissue inside of a tooth’s pulp becomes damaged it begins to deteriorate, allowing bacteria to multiply within the tooth. This bacteria can cause a tooth to become infected or for a dental abscess to form. An abscess occurs when an infection spreads past the roots of a tooth, and results in a pus filled sac that causes extreme discomfort.

Besides causing the development of an abscess, an infected root canal of a tooth can also result in:

  • Swelling that can spread to the face, neck, or head
  • The deterioration and loss of bone around the root of a tooth
  • The formation of a hole in the side of a tooth that causes drainage problems stemming from the root of a tooth.

Fortunately, a tooth’s nerve isn’t important to its health and function once the tooth has fully emerged through the gum line. The only function a tooth’s nerve serves to a developed tooth is to provide the sensation of hot or cold. Whether a tooth still contains its pulp or nerve does not affect its function on a day-to-day basis. By removing the interior of a tooth, a root canal removes all signs of an infection.

Symptoms that Signal a Root Canal is Needed

If you suffer from any of the following symptoms, you might need to undergo a root canal:

  • You experience extreme tooth pain when chewing or after applying pressure to the tooth
  • Exaggerated pain or sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • A tooth experiences a darkening or discoloration
  • Persistent swelling or tenderness of the surrounding gums
  • A recurring pimple or sac along the gum line

Occasionally no symptoms will accompany the infection that necessitates a root canal. Even though you might not experience the pain or discomfort caused by an infection, it’s still important that you receive treatment as a tooth infection can spread to other parts of the body.

A health writer, Timothy Lemke learned what to expect from a root canal from Dr. Lance Bailey, a dentist in Portland, Oregon.

Water is an essential ingredient to all life, whether it is plant or animal. The cells inside the human body are comprised mostly of water. Without ample water we would cease to exist because it is so important in our complete biological process. Contrary to popular human bodythought, there are really no areas of the body which are dry. Water is contained in all the organs, bones, muscles, tendons, cartilage, brain and skin tissue. Although dependent upon the individual, water can be found in certain percentages contained in the body.

Water Content According to Age and Gender

At birth, babies contain the highest percentage of water, which is about 78 percent. The amount declines to about 65 percent after one year. Adult men of average height and weight contain about 60 percent water. Due to their lack of muscle tissue found in men, women have a slightly higher body fat percentage than men. Fat does not have the water content found in lean tissue, therefore women contain roughly 55 percent water. Individuals that have increased body fat will have less water (percentage) in their systems.

Where Does Water Reside in the Body?

Hormones regulate the amount or volume of water in the body. Water travels from within the cells (intracellular fluid) to the outside (extracellular fluid) of the cells. The intracellular fluid comprises about 63 percent of the total volume, while the rest is regulated to the extracellular fluid. Blood is composed of white and red blood cells, plasma and platelet cells. The blood itself contributes to about 8 percent of a person’s body weight. Although all the blood cells contain water, plasma has no cells and acts as a suspension fluid for the cells. Plasma is composed of 93 percent water, taking up roughly 20 percent of the extracellular fluid.

Tissue fluid (interstitial fluid) accounts for 80 percent of all extracellular fluid contained in the body, or about 2.9 gallons in the average adult. Tissue fluid forms a bath around the cells, surrounding them to aid in transporting needed nutrients throughout the body. Tissue fluid also aids in removing toxic wastes.

Transcellular fluid, which is an extracellular fluid, surrounds and protects the central nervous system. It also produces fluids that rejuvenates the joint and ocular systems. Transcelluar fluid is the main component in urine that transports and excretes harmful contaminants and waste from the body.

Water’s Active Role in the Human Body

In general, water is the transportation device for all the nutrients, chemicals and minerals needed to feed and maintain all the body’s biological systems. By water’s very nature of fluidity and surface tension to particles, it not only transports needed materials but picks up waste and flushes it from the system. The water in the blood stream actively metabolizes and delivers proteins and carbohydrates, which are the primary foods sources that feed the body for energy and growth. Water aids in digestion by breaking down solid materials into finer particles, important for evacuation. Water acts a cooling device or air conditioner by purging water up through the pores to cool the body in the form of sweat.

Dehydration

Dehydration can occur with a 2 percent loss of body water. Lack of drinking water, heavy exercise or extreme heat can decrease body water volume. Symptoms such as headache, dizziness, decreased endurance and low blood pressure can result. Extreme dehydration can cause unconsciousness or even death.

Improving your appearance takes many different forms, from cosmetic surgery in Johannesburg to getting a facial at the local beauty salon.  There are a selection of super foods, easily incorporated into your diet, which can help transform both your body and your mind.

Routes to an Energy Boost

To kick-start your body and give it an energy boost, look no further than the baobab fruit.  The baobab tree is native to Africa and is often referred to as the ‘upside-down tree’ due to the fact that its roots are in the air.  There are many myths and legends surrounding the tree but one thing is solid fact; the baobab fruit does wonders for your body.  The fruit is produced sustainably and ground down into a powder.  Baobab contains more vitamin C than an orange, is more calcium-rich than milk and also holds iron, magnesium, vitamin B and prebiotic fibres within it.

A super-fruit if ever there was one.  The powder is easily used in smoothies and yoghurts, revitalising your body and giving you a bit of an energy boost.  Another super-substance which works to cleanse and refresh your body is alkaline water.  This differs from tap water as it is ionised, thereby including antioxidants which fight against ageing and minerals that work to combat acidity.  Purchasing an ionising water-filter is fairly expensive, but the effects on your body may just make it worthwhile.

Who is the Fairest of Them All?

If you are considering cosmetic surgery in Johannesburg and wish to give your skin a boost, collagen may be the right thing for you.  Collagen consists of a group of proteins and is used in skin care products to halt the ageing process and stop wrinkles in their tracks.  Now there is a new product on the market in the form of collagen shots.  The drink contains all the benefits of the beauty treatments, including amino acids to get shot of wrinkles and a range of vitamins to keep skin looking and feeling youthful.  There are also an abundance of super-fruits available to get skin glowing.

One of these is the acai fruit, which originates in the Amazon rainforest.  The purple berry is small but extremely effective, containing antioxidants and the same amount of protein as an egg.  Consequently, the acai berries go a long way to helping you maintain healthy skin and strong hair and nails.  Similarly to the baobab fruit, they can be incorporated into a tasty smoothie or yoghurt.  Legend has it that the fruit used to carry the moniker ‘beauty berry’ and it is easy to see why with all the benefits it has to offer!

Sex Bombs and Super Seeds

With all this talk of new skin regimes and cosmetic surgery in Johannesburg you may be feeling a little exhausted.  Luckily, there is a super-food that does just the trick.  Chia, a gluten free seed containing five times more calcium than milk, is sure to get your mental juices flowing.  The seed is an all-round high flyer, containing lots of fibre, protein and antioxidants, as well as holding more vitamin C than an orange.  The seed contains tryptophan, which biologically derives serotonin, helping to boost overall happiness levels.

Not only will you be drinking a tasty smoothie, but you will be feeling pretty good too.  To maintain this level of well-being, try out maca.  The root plant is used in both food and medicine and takes the form of liquids and powders.  There are many benefits associated with the root, from stamina and energy to mental focus.  Additionally, it is thought that the powder helps to ease sexual frustration and increases sex drive.  Who said super-foods could not provide fun for all?

Fearing the dentist is a problem that affects many individuals. I was once terrified of sitting in the dentist chair. It all started when I was a little child and it quickly developed into serious anxiety. My fear took over and I avoided going to the dentist for several years. In those years I experienced extreme pain and one of my back teeth cracked and broke. Yet even then I refused to go and see a professional, choosing to visit the doctor to obtain antibiotics instead.

That was a long time ago and I am happy to say I have since lost my fear. After one of my front teeth broke I had no choice but to go and try to save it. Being in my thirties I really didn’t want to have a gap that was easily visible, I guess vanity and not pain was all the encouragement I really needed. Anyway, upon my first visit I noticed that the world of dentistry has come on leaps and bounds since I had last visited.  Technology has improved dentistry for everyone, especially those who fear getting treatment or just having a check-up.

Still Have a Fear? You Can Beat it Easily!

Despite knowing pain has been taken out of dentistry there are those who still find the idea of heading to the dentist too traumatic. I do have some advice to share with you if you are still uncertain as to whether you can even pluck up the courage to attend an appointment. I used these tips to help me go and finally get my mouth sorted out so I want to share them with you to help you to overcome your fear.

  1. Recognise that fear is normal as almost everyone attending their appointments feels anxious; it’s not just you. The emotions you are going to experience are all natural. If you experience panic attacks, try and focus your mind on something else such as tapping your arm, counting in your head or even invite the panic attack to come so you can get it out the way – often panic attacks fail to surface when you take the “give me all that you’ve got” approach.
  2. Find the right dentist who is trained to deal with anxious patients. A good dentist will make all of the difference. Ask for suggestions from friends, visit various websites and have a chat with the receptionists to help you decide.
  3. Take everything in small steps. Understanding dentists will be prepared to take your necessary treatments slowly if that’s what you would prefer. Attend an appointment to meet and discuss your fears and dental problems, book a second for a cleaning (clean teeth feel fabulous and look fantastic and a cleaning can inspire you to go further with your treatment) and then move on to any other steps you may need to take – just one thing at a time.
  4. If you are very anxious your dentist may offer ways to reduce your anxiety when having treatment. This may include using sedation, hypnosis or even therapy. You could be referred to a specialist or the dentist might offer the necessary treatments in-house.
  5. Stay positive and focus on the benefits. As I was gripped with fear in the waiting room I pictured myself with lovely healthy teeth and how it would feel flashing a bright smile after the work was done. It was still hard to make myself go and sit in the chair but by staying positive I was able to get through it.

Dentists have come a long way in recent years. Any fears you may have from past experiences or inherited fear will quickly subside once you find yourself a new dentist.

Wendy Derbyshire is a writer who believes that you can easily overcome your fear of going to the dentist. These tips should help you to calm your nerves and overcome your fear next time that you go to see your dentist in Sandton or your local area.

Staten Island is filled with amazing sites and locations for the local resident’s and tourists. Someone new to the city should consider trying Denino’s Pizza Tavern.  You never know what delicious local food you may eat that would require a trip to the surgeon. While your regular dentist is the place to go for typical dental checkups, routine cleanings, and standard cavity fillings, there are some issues that require the work of a specialized oral surgeon. Just like you may have traveled to the orthodontist as a kid – or taken your child to dentistone – to get braces because a standard dentist isn’t quite specialized enough to deal with orthodontic issues, oral surgeons are the go-to for more in-depth procedures. Many times, your dentist will refer you to an oral surgeon, while other times, it’s up to you to do a bit of research to find one you’re comfortable with and is in your budget. Regardless of what particular practice you choose to patronize, below are three services that you will need to head to your local Staten Island oral surgeon to get taken care of.

Dental Implants

If you have ever been to Fun Station USA on the west coast of the island, you will know that the activities can sometimes get a little physical.  This can lead to a damaged or broken tooth. When teeth are missing or damaged to a point beyond repair, getting dental implants to fill those voids from an experienced professional is extremely important. Whether you need one simple implant or you’re in search of a brand new smile in one visit, dental implants have the look and feel of natural teeth. They look great, and they help keep the mouth healthy by preventing other teeth from shifting. These types of procedures can’t typically be completed at your regular dentist, so using a local oral surgeon is the best way to go.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

For some patients, wisdom teeth never cause much of a problem, but for others, they end up wreaking havoc.  Young adults commonly have this problem and the symptoms can come out at school.  Wisdom teeth can be painful and detrimental to an individual’s overall oral health when they become impacted, which necessitates a removal. Because wisdom teeth are deep in the back of the mouth with large roots, removal often requires surgery. Some standard dentists can remove wisdom teeth, but for the smoothest possible experience, the task should be left up to an oral surgeon.

Botox

Botox? Yes, believe it or not, some of the leading oral surgery facilities in the New York area also specialize in Botox treatments. Botox is widely admired for the incredible calming effect it has on wrinkles – Botox prevents the release of acetylcholine, which is a chemical released by your body that causes muscle contractions. By inhibiting acetylcholine, your facial muscles stay relaxed, resulting in a smooth appearance rather than the wrinkled one that tense contracting muscles can cause. Botox should always be administered by an experienced doctor, and luckily for Staten Island residents, highly-qualified Botox doctors can be found at local oral surgery practices.

From dental implants to wisdom tooth removal to Botox, Staten Island oral surgeons can get the job done.

loud musicKeeping your ears safe and not exposing them to a great deal of loud noise is crucial for their long-term health. The key to preserving your ears health is to limit the amount of sound they are exposed to – and keeping these noise levels to a minimum can help to prevent hearing problems in the long term.

Deafness is usually caused by damage to the inner ear, and, more specifically, small hair cells inside the ear itself. Unfortunately, hearing loss caused by being exposed to too much noise is permanent and in most cases irreversible, so it’s wise to take good care of your hearing at all times to prevent any unforeseen problems which cannot be fixed later on in life.

Loud Sounds Mean The Less Time You Should Listen

Avoiding loud noise at all times may not be possible – many of us want to attend music gigs and night clubs where huge beats are common. However, we should all keep in mind that the louder the sound is, the less time you should stay exposed to it. A loud sound may not be uncomfortable at the time – but you need to use your own judgment on how loud should be defined and protect yourself accordingly.

Worryingly, our hearing can also be affected by short bursts of loud noise including fireworks and gunshots, which are often outside of our control. You may also be at risk at work due to the nature of your job, especially if you’re working on the roads or in a factory, although there is now a huge amount of legislation around health and safety and work which should be helping to protect you. Make sure that if you’re concerned about noise at work that you talk to your human resources department as soon as possible to get some advice.

Top Tips For Protecting Your Hearing Health

skullcandy headphonesBy following a few very simple tips, you can avoid permanent damage to your hearing and continue listening to your favourite rock tunes too:

  • Follow The 60/60 Rule – When listening to your music on your iPod or other MP3 player, make sure it’s only at 60% volume on the player itself and limit yourself to 60 minutes of listening a day. This will let your ears recover suitably between music sessions and will help to prolong the life of your hearing.
  • Use Noise Cancelling Headphones – If you can get your hands on some top quality headphones such as Dr Dre Beats or some Skullcandy’s, you will have a brilliant weapon in the war against hearing loss. Make sure you take regular breaks from them no matter how good they are to give your ears a rest, and make sure you set the volume at an appropriate level.
  • Keep The Volume Down In The Car – When you listen to loud music in your car, you’re exposing your ears to more pressure than normal. Confined spaces increase the risk of damage to your hearing, so if you’re going to have the music loud in your car make sure you don’t keep it at that level for too long – no matter how bad the traffic is.

By following these simple tips and keeping your ears in good condition, you can reduce the impact of music and other noise on your hearing in the long term, meaning you will have many more years to enjoy the sounds of the world around us.

chemical protection

While certainly a national tragedy, the Texas fire and explosion in West, Texas may have opened the eyes of lawmakers on whether or not chemical safety regulations need to be heightened in order to prevent further tragedies from occurring. While time will tell on what exactly could have been done in regard to the disaster in Texas, this event offers further evidence of the importance of worker safety and the measures companies must take to ensure their protection.

chemical protection

There’s no question that the most important part of any company is the workforce that makes up the backbone of the organization. This is the case when the work is primarily in the office, and it’s certainly the case when the work consists of potentially hazardous materials. The OSHA and CDC are two dedicated organizations that have resources available to help business keep their workers safe when dealing with potentially harmful chemicals. One of the most important things that they regulate on is protective clothing. Here are some things they stress:

  • Determine whether or not an environment can potentially produce hazards: The OSHA requires companies and organizations to wear protective clothing whenever hazards are possible. These environments include those in emergency response, chemical manufacturing and process industries, hazardous site cleanup and disposal, pesticide application for crops and other agricultural commodities, and asbestos removal.
  • Form a chemical protective ensemble: Depending on the work required, workers may be exposed to dangerous chemicals and need the protective clothing to combat these hazards. A chemical protective ensemble could consist of some or all of these pieces: protective clothing, cooling system, communications device, head protection, eye protection, ear protection, inner garment and outer protection.
  • Asses the chemical protective ensemble: The OSHA stresses that not all chemical protective ensembles are the same. For example, liquid-splash protective suits may protect against some things, but they tend to be sold incomplete. Therefore, you’ll need to assess the overall ensemble to determine whether or not it provides the protection necessary for the type of environment the workers might be exposed to.
  • Don’t forget the accessories: Vests and head gear are obviously important, but don’t forget accessories like chemical resistant gloves and boots, which can protect your workers from any chemical exposure and spills. As mentioned above, the liquid-splash protective suits may work, but they tend to be sold without gloves or boots. Make sure your workers are equipped with the accessories necessary to stay protected.

Sometimes too much is just as bad as not enough: While one might not think it’s possible to be overprotected, it’s really just the opposite. If a worker is wearing protective clothing from head to toe, it is possible that the excess clothing could hinder the worker from doing his/her job effectively, thereby, causing more potential harm. That’s why it’s important to understand that when it comes to protective clothing, one size does not fit all. Knowing the potential hazards your workers might face will go a long way in making sure your workers have just the right amount of protective gear to complete the job without being affected.

New research commissioned by the British Chiropractic Association suggests that back and neck pain prevents a significant percentage of parents from picking up or carrying their children while other report problems carrying car seats and difficulty playing with their children because of pain.

Follow these Rules for a Healthier Back

back pain from picking-up kidIn order to maintain a healthy back while parenting young children, the British Chiropractic Association urges parents to follow some common sense rules. For example, carry a baby as close to your center of gravity as possible, such as in a sling, papoose, or other style of carrier. Support straps that cross at the back are better for distributing the child’s weight.

Buy a stroller that has adjustable height settings so it can be moved to accommodate the height of whoever is pushing it so proper posture is maintained: walking upright with a straight spine with the hands resting at a comfortable height.

Minimize bending over when playing with children by getting down to their level. That said, when kneeling be mindful to keep your back straight instead of hunching over. Also, kneeling for extended periods can put undue pressure on the joint so mix it up. Similarly, when picking up toys or otherwise cleaning up, don’t bend over at the waist; squat.

Be Careful of How You Pick Up Your Child

Chiropractor Kevin Loughlin observes, “As a parent myself, I understand how easy it is to put a strain on your back when looking after young children, as you are constantly carrying them from A to B, bending down to pick up their toys and generally attending to them. For this reason, it is important to ensure that you are not damaging your back in the process, and the BCA’s advice is valuable in showing that you can look after your health at the same time as looking after your children.”

As your baby becomes a toddler, picking them up and carrying them around becomes more strenuous. Chiropractors strongly urge parents to encourage toddlers to be as self-sufficient as age appropriate. For example, older toddlers can climb into a car seat rather than the parent picking them up and placing them in it. Fostering such activity is good for the child’s development and for keeping the parent’s back strong and healthy.

If you’re unsure of how to safely pick-up your child, be sure to do a few internet searches, maybe even watching a video or two on the topic, to ensure you’re back is properly maintained and is kept healthy.

Undergoing surgery can often be a stressful experience. The preparations beforehand, time sedated, and recovery period can all be daunting to deal with, even in the case of successful and straightforward operations. Because of these built-in aggravators, it would seem rational for hospitals to do everything they could to make sure surgeries were routine and complication-free. Yet many hospitals have been slow to implement safety measures aimed at reducing so-called “never events.”

What are “Never Events?”

The term “never events” was first coined in 2001. Simply put, “never events” are events which never ought to take place in the course of a medical procedure. By definition, their occurrence represents a failure in judgment or execution which is at odds with the rigorous precision associated with surgical operation and other training-intensive tasks. Yet despite their name, never events do in fact happen, and with a degree of regularity which may be cause for alarm.

Retained Surgical Items: For Patients, an Unexpected Souvenir

Each year, approximately 32 million surgical procedures are performed. And every year, approximately 4,000 surgical sponges are mistakenly left inside of patients. This amounts to approximately 11 retained sponges a day. As such, retained surgical items account for close to half of all surgical never events.

Retained objects aren’t good for anyone. They’re certainly not good for the patient, who suffers a heightened risk of infection and other complications as a result of their own personal never event. They’re also quite bad for the offending hospital – both financially and in terms of their reputation. Hospitalizations resulting from retained objects cost on average approximately $60,000 per case. But malpractice suits can cost the hospital an additional $100,000 to $200,000.

The Way Forward for Hospitals

At present, only 15 percent of hospitals use surgical sponges that are equipped with electronic tracking devices. The rationale behind this low number is that many hospitals are already dealing with budget issues and don’t feel that they have money to spend on such safety measures. Yet it only costs about $8 dollars per surgery to implement sponge tracking technology, and this practice has been shown to provide real gains in safety. At three hospitals in Indianapolis, sponges were being lost about once a month on average. After implementing electronic tracking, these three hospitals have gone five years without a single case of a retained sponge. Furthermore, they have reported several instances in which the tracking technology has helped to evade close calls.

Comparatively, traditional instrument counting is very hit-or-miss. This involves counting all instruments and sponges that have been used over the course of an operation to make sure that they are accounted for. Yet, such practices have only been shown to be effective about 77 percent of the time when checking for a lost object.

So it seems fairly clear – there may always be “never events,” but hospitals could be doing more to ensure there are progressively less of them.

If you have become rather depressed about the current state of your teeth, cosmetic dentistry might be the key to a happier existence. Instead of rushing into the procedure, however, you will need to keep a few things in mind. The nuances of your dental insurance dental mouth mirror near healthy mouthmight render a financial verdict before you have a chance to begin. If you feel that you are properly covered, however, then you can move on to the next step. There are a range of procedures that can gently coax your teeth back into radiant beacons of light.

Tooth Whitening

Very minor discolorations will only be bothersome to select individuals. If your teeth have become noticeably yellow, however, you can schedule a whitening procedure. Your dental professional will use a strong hydrogen peroxide gel, which will be placed on the teeth after the gums have been effectively protected. In most cases, a plasma arc light will then be used to drive forth the proper chemical reactions. The teeth will be much lighter in the aftermath. You should only have such a procedure performed if your gums and teeth are both in great health. Otherwise, sensitivity can result.

Porcelain Veneers

Because cosmetic dentistry focuses much of its efforts on radiant teeth, you might also consider porcelain veneers. These are thin laminates that are placed against the exteriors of the teeth. If you have undergone a traditional tooth whitening procedure but were not happy with the results, veneers might be another option. Discolored teeth that have been stripped of most of their resident enamel may require porcelain adhesives as a last resort.

Gum Lifts

Gum lifts are used by dental professionals to remove gum tissue that is unwanted. This can, in effect, make your teeth appear more elongated. If you have long felt that your smile is being undermined by extra gum tissue, you can undergo this procedure. After the area is numbed with a local anesthetic, the excess gum tissue will be excised. You should be prepared for some moderate discomfort in the immediate aftermath.

Tooth Shaping

Once the larger problems have been effectively repaired, you might also turn to tooth shaping. By removing some of the enamel, dentists can ensure that each tooth is the same length. Likewise, teeth with jagged edges can be smoothed out. Because enamel is quite hard, it will have to be scraped away with specially calibrated instruments.

Braces

Braces, which usually fall under the auspices of a certified orthodontist, are nevertheless considered cosmetic. They can be used to fix overbites and prevent overcrowding further down the road. Your regular dentist will likely recommend a consultation with a professional orthodontist so that the details can be worked out.

Weighing Your Options

In the end, you will want to determine if certain cosmetic procedures are worth the trouble. Severe discolorations can be improved quite a bit with the right procedure. Minor imperfections, on the other hand, might be better left alone. You should consider your dental health, your finances, and your level of unhappiness before you settle on a viable plan of action.
